Jon Hill, known locally as PlymouthJon

Jon Hill — otherwise known as PlymouthJon — is the Plymouth community campaigner who delivers results, not just words.

Jon has lived in Stonehouse since 2009 and is a well-known resident across St. Peter and The Waterfront. He meets and works with hundreds of businesses, individuals and tourists every month, and has completed over 1,000 pieces of casework to improve the City of Plymouth.

Both sides of the pavement

Jon lived as a fully able-bodied person until almost 18, when a motorcycle collision left him disabled. He knows both sides of the kerb from the inside — what a city looks like when it works for you, and what it looks like when it doesn't.

That is why access runs through everything he does. Not as a box to tick at the end of a project, but as the thing you design in from the start. He has spent years getting ramps built, dropped kerbs cut, pavements repaired and playgrounds opened up, and he helps businesses across Plymouth and the UK work out affordable ways to make their premises usable by everyone.

Serving Plymouth

Jon has been an active volunteer in Plymouth since 2010, collecting for Lions Clubs International with the Plymouth Lions and serving as a trustee for Plymouth Foyer, the Plymouth Area Disability Action Network and the Municipal Charities of Plymouth.

These roles are not separate from his campaigning — they are where a lot of the casework comes from. Poverty, housing, accessibility and isolation are not abstractions when you sit on the boards of the organisations dealing with them.

Business and the local economy

Jon runs a group of digital businesses from Plymouth, including a web hosting company he founded in 1999. He grew up surrounded by family and friends running independent businesses in the city, which is where his Shop Local Plymouth campaign comes from.

He also built and runs Discover Plymouth, championing the city's identity, community life and local traders to residents and visitors alike.

How Jon works

Report it, fix it, then talk about it. Jon would rather turn up, take the photograph, chase the department and get the thing repaired than issue a statement about it. Most of the campaigns on this site started as one resident's complaint about one street.

If something in the ward is broken, blocked, dumped, unlit or inaccessible, tell him. It becomes casework the same day.
