About The Hoe

The Hoe is the part of the ward the whole city uses. Smeaton's Tower, Tinside, the foreshore and the lawns take enormous footfall in summer, and the casework here is mostly about keeping it safe, clean and usable for people who cannot manage steps and steep paths.

It is also where the pontoon diving boards campaign comes from. Jon has watched too many people risk serious injury tombstoning from structures never designed for it, and wants proper sea-based diving pontoons sited by Tinside instead.

What comes up most in The Hoe

  • Step-free routes down to the foreshore and Tinside
  • Tombstoning and unsafe diving from the sea walls
  • Accessible seating, shelter and toilets on the promenade
  • Litter and bin capacity on hot weekends
  • Lighting and safety on the paths after dark
